24 of the world’s largest mobile phone companies have announced they are teaming up to create an ‘open international applications platform’ to rival the success of Apple’s iPhone app store.
The mobile operators include Vodafone, AT&T, DoCoMo, Deutsche Telekom and China Mobile made the announcement at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Three device manufacturers – LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson – are also involved in the project.
The ideology behind the ambitious project is to create one solution for app developers and halt the increasing fragmentation of worldwide app development. By creating a single point-of-entry for developers this will mean a common open standard that will allow apps to be used across multiple platforms.
