Google CEO Eric Schmidt firmly decalred his company’s commitment to mobile communications at the World Mobile Congress.

Schmidt confirmed that mobile is the key to Google’s future and its top programmers now have mobile as their primary focus.

Google’s new mantra is ‘Mobile First’ and Schmidt said the three areas of computing power, interconnectivity and the cloud have converged on the mobile device. “The phone is where these three all interconnect and you need to get these three waves right if you want to win,” he declared.

Unveiling a glimpse of the future Schmidt revealed some of Google’s latest developments including speech and image recognition technology. He drew gasps from the crowd as an optical character recognition (OCR) tool was demonstrated. It was able to translate a picture of a German menu into English.

Significantly Google also revealed that the Android platform now supports full Flash, something the iPhone operating system doesn’t do.

The mobile wars are intensifying. Hold on to your hats, the speed of change will be dazzling in the next few years.
