How many of us in the digital age still buys CDs? Do you have hundreds of the shiny discs hanging around, cloogging up space in your apartment/house? Well, if you do and have all your music stored digitally there’s a chance to make some cash from the plastic detrius.

GameStop, the games retailer, is going into the music business. Currently the 55 stores in Ireland offer people cash or store credit when they trade in games and DVDs. Now they will accept music CDs.

It is estimated that 250 tonnes of CDs are sent as waste to landfill in Ireland each year. This figure is rising as more people move to downloading digital formats.

The CD music album market generated sales of 6.2 million units worth approximately €100m in 2009. Over the past five years, 40 million units worth an estimated €750m were sold in Ireland. If you don’t want to sell your CDs you can make hovercrafts instead.
