Rupert Murdoch finally revealed his future plans as regards charging for content online. Initially two of his UK papers, The Times and the Sunday Times will charge for their full online versions. They will become the first mass circulation publications to do so in the UK. From June 2010, online access to both titles will be cost 1.10 euro a day, or 2.20 for the whole week – the current price for the Sunday Times print title. The promise of more interactive content to tempt readers to pay for a service that was always free is one of the main Murdoch tactics. In essence this will mean more video content, vlogs and podcasts. However, this should be no problem to Murdoch and his sons – they own many TV news stations. The print publisher is already one of the world’s biggest video content producers. In an ironic twist, most print publishers across the globe hope that Murdoch’s plans succeed. ‘Free is too expensive’ and without an online revenue model most traditional publishers now face oblivion.
