News Corp chief executive Rupert Murdoch has called on other big newspaper publishers to prevent search engines from displaying full articles for free. Speaking yesterday at the National Press Club in Washington Murdoch said, “Most newspapers in this country are going to have to put a pay wall up.”
Murdoch’s anger against Google is well documented and is considering blocking Google from displaying any of his newspapers’ article. While the subscription model of the Wall Street Journal seems to work okay for Murdoch’s News Corp, the company is having difficulty implementing a pay wall for the New York Times.
Critics of Murdoch’s plans suggest he is behind the times with pay walls and subscription models and they simply won’t work in a world now dominated by real time news services, social networks and search.
