The latest figures from Facebook reveal a simple truth – women are leading the social media charge. Figures from BrianSolis.com show that 57% of the 400 million or so Facebook users are female and 46 million more females than males visit the site each month.
Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO (above), says, “The social world is led by women”. Women dominate sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Bebo and Flickr, while men are more active on Digg, YouTube and LinkedIn. What the trends point to is proof that women and men use social networks differently. While women use networks to make connections and share stuff from their personal lives, men use them as a means to gather information and increase their status.
This type of human behavior can be seen as a simple transfer of historical, human biological and social attributes to the social networks. Men it seems are researchers and social climbers, while women like to make connections, get personal and learn about other people’s real life experiences.
