While the app gold rush has been well noted by the media, the next big thing for developers has always been social gaming. Online social gaming and fantasy sports gaming is valued in excess of $2.5bn in the US and in the UK the Barclay’s Premier League alone has 2.3 million players and the site has grown year-on-year by over 20% since its inception. If you have an appealing game it seem the sky’s the limit. Just ask the creators of FarmVille.
So, it was interesting to hear from an Irish-based start-up Ubecha.com. It describes itself as a “new online platform that combines community-based betting with social media and fantasy sports”. Essentially it’s a fantasy football game that has a social media wrap around and the option for players to bet on their teams.
Ubecha has signed up Setanta Sports Ireland as its sports media partner and as a commercial partner for its World Cup Fantasy Football competition. “Our strategy is to shake up the fantasy sports market with a new approach and ultimately provide a superior fantasy gaming experience to what currently exists in the marketplace,” says CEO, Paul Cooling.
