The iPhone 4 is finally revealed. The new phone is an improvement on the 3G model. The essential improvements include:
• Video calling is also possible with the iPhone 4. Apple calls it ‘Face Time’ and it will be WiFi only until “the cellular networks are ready for the future”, said Jobs. The key to Face Time is zero setup. Face Time now an open industry standard.
• The battery is 16% bigger than the 3G. Coupled with the A4 processor and new display, it results in a longer battery life. Apple claims 40% more talk time;
• The new iPhone comes with iOS 4, a new name for the iPhone OS. The biggest new feature is selective multi-tasking;
• iMovie is on the iPhone, you can shoot and edit movies on the new phone;
• The 3.5-inch screen has a resolution of 960 × 640 pixels. Apple calls is the Retina Display, and it has four times as many pixels as the 3G;
• iBooks will also be available for the new iOS4. Apple claims that the new iPhone 4’s 325 pixel-per-inch display will make the books very readable;
• Microsoft’s BING search engine is on the new phone. Google is still the default search engine though;
• The new iPhone will include a gyroscope, which should be good for gaming and augmented reality apps;
• It has been given a new camera, upgrading the 3MP camera on the 3GS to a 5MP LED flash enabled camera that has 5x digital zoom;
• iAd launches on July 1. Steve Jobs predicts it will be 48% of mobile display ad market in second half of 2010;
• The iPhone 4 will be available on June 24 in the US, it comes in two colors, black & white — price is $199 in the US for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model. It will be available in Ireland in July. Date to be confirmed. Nice spoof below.
