Online spending surges to €2.13 billion in 2009

The Irish spent a whopping €2.13 billion online in 2009 according to a survey by Visa Europe. Half of the people surveyed said they can save up to 30% by buying goods online.
The average Irish shopper spends €1,450 online per year. More than half (53%) of those surveyed bought things online that cannot be found in Irish stores.
Flights and holidays are the most popular online purchase with 83% having bought these in 2009. 67% of those surveyed bought ‘entertainment tickets’ while CDs, DVDs and video games were the third most popular purchase.
The survey found that 88% of online shoppers were confident of shopping online and 80% claim to know what security features to look for on websites.
However, Conor Langford, vice-president, Ireland at Visa Europe, pointed out that consumer rights are still an issue for online shoppers. “Only 62% of shoppers know what their consumer rights are when buying online, so we would always urge people to do their research if they are unsure.”
Irish women are the highest spenders with 25% spending more than €1,000 online last year.
