‘The web is now a channel’ says Google as it gives us a glimpse of what TV viewing is evolving into. Google TV Apps have arrived and Google TV lets users search all of the content on their TVs, the web, and apps – then access it with a single click. People can also switch between TV and the web without having to change inputs on their sets. “With Google Chrome and Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Google TV lets you access everything on the web. Watch your favorite web videos, view photos, play games, check fantasy scores, chat with friends, and do everything else you’re accustomed to doing online. Plus, the world’s best websites are now being perfected for television,”says Google’s marketing pitch.
Google TV is powered by Android software and the Chrome Web browser and can be accessed using special Sony smart TVs or set-top boxes from Logitech that route Web content to existing TV sets.
Amazon, the NBA, Netflix, The New York Times, NBC Universal, USA Today and others will provide content and applications as well as music sites VEVO, Pandora, Napster and Twitter. The Americans will have Google TV this autumn. The rest of the world must wait until 2011 at the earliest.
