The Appys with The Carphone Warehouse is the only dedicated awards programme in Ireland for app development and design. Entries were open to anyone who developed or paid for the development of a mobile app. Apps across all the platforms were entered – iOS, Android, Bada, Symbian, Ovi, etc.
The event is designed to celebrate the innovation and creativity now abundant in the app development industry and reward the best, the most useful and the most creative apps and their developers.
“The app economy is creating new revenues for entrepreneurs, companies and publishers and is changing the way business is done,” says Stephen Conmy, editor of Digital Times and organiser of the Appys. “This year we are concentrating on smartphone [mobile] apps but next year we will also delve into the rich world of tablet apps, web apps, social media apps and perhaps even web TV apps.”
Des Doris, founder of The Appys and managing director of Alchemy Events says the sheer number of apps entered was impressive. “Over 170 apps were entered and from ‘all walks of life’ as such. With the surge in smart phone adoption by consumers and the increase in mobile carriers, a new battleground has opened up – one that will be characterised by networks fighting to get cheaper smart phones into the hands of consumers. With more smart phones alive across the various platforms and networks, more apps will have to be developed and new audiences will want richer utility apps – apps that can make life easier.”
Edward Conmy, director of Digital Times and organiser of the event said the reaction from the business and media sectors to the awards was encouraging. “It’s the first year of The Appys with The Carphone Warehouse and we’d like to thank our title sponsor, our media sponsor Independent.ie and all our category sponsors – Nokia, IDA Ireland, Meteor, Samsung, O2, DIT, Tapadoo, AdForce, Furious Tribe, vStream and Foras na Gaeilge.”
Tickets for the event are €75 (ex VAT) and can be booked at www.theappys.ie.
Winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony at The Gibson Hotel, Point Village, Dublin 1 on Thursday November 4. Event starts at 7 pm.
