Mobile OS TrendsTech Crunch recently reported the split between adverts served on operating systems from mobile advertising giant, Millennial Media. So no point in rehashing US based blog posts, right? Well, as with all things State-side it is only a matter of time before we reflect the trend and the shift in power from iOS to Android. There is nothing new there, however, the speed this has happened is truly remarkable and has immediate implications for Ireland’s advertising and development community.

Meteor is running a campaign based solely  on pushing Android smart phones. While the others have not been that specific it is noticeable how the alternative operating system is promoted in store and online as a viable alternative to Apple’s iOS. Well, it appears its faith is paying off big time. Millennial Media’s adverts reach 63 million out of the available 77 million mobile web users in the US. It is now saying Android is tied with iOS on 37% of ads served. Blackberry’s RIM OS is not doing too badly either, on a sturdy 20%. See the image for a breakdown.
The truly remarkable statistic is the level of growth in ad impressions on Android phones since January (nearly a year at this stage). Advert requests have grown from a small base by 2,182%. Yes, that is 2,182 real per-cent. This shows you how far [from behind] they have come to share the biggest slice of the pie.
Long story short – mobile advertising platforms need to start innovating ad formats for the Android OS as soon as possible and developers can now begin to look with certainty at a developing critical mass for their apps on an alternative development platform. Google built it and they are coming it seems.
