Music discovery app Shazam has added a social layer as part of its latest update. ‘Shazam Friends’ (iOS available now with Android to come in a few weeks) lets users share discovered music with their Facebook friends and Twitter followers.
Picture the scene – you’re sitting in a café and a really great song starts playing on the sound system. You don’t know what it is but would like to know and share it with your friends. All you have to do it open the Shazam Friends app on your iPhone, let it ‘listen’ to the music and when it identifies the tune it will tag it and allow you to share it via Facebook, Twitter or email. You can also buy the song there and then via iTunes.
“Everyone has a friend whose taste they like, and this is a way to share with those people. We’re expecting the amount of music discovery to take off. To go from proactive searching to a browsing experience as well,” says David Jones, EBVP of Marketing at Shazam.
Users have to connect the app with their Facebook account in order to use the service, and they can only interact with Facebook friends who have also activated the updated app.
Users will also have access to a news feed featuring songs that their friends have tagged. Shazam currently has over 100 million users. The music industry will be pleased.
