The inaugural Irish Social Media Awards, founded by Damien Mulley and Rick O’Shea, has secured a lead sponsor in the guise of Bord Gáis Energy.
Mulley is no stranger to awards shows, having already founded the Irish Web Awards and Blog Awards. The Social Media Awards is described as a sister event to the Web awards. There are 16 categories available for entry with sub categories under Facebook, for business, not-for-profit and integrated campaigns; and, under Twitter for best business accounts for marketing, sales, and support.
Unlike most media awards, entries and nominations are free. Mulley is very pointed about this. “The idea of the awards, like the Web Awards and Blog Awards before them is to give everyone an equal chance of having their work highlighted and evaluated.” Revenues to sustain and run the awards will likely come from sponsorship and ticket sales.
Bord Gáis Energy is one Irish company that would have been in with a good chance of winning a few gongs due to its own commitment to social media. Digital and social media manager at Bord Gáis Energy Eoin O’Suilleabhain said, “Irish companies have successfully integrated social media into their business, marketing and customer relationship strategies and with over two million Facebook users and 235,000 Twitter users in Ireland it is a channel that must be embraced. We want to recognise the talent out there.”
Nominations end today, Tuesday May 3rd 2011 at 9pm. The awards will take place on May 26th in the Mansion House, Dublin.
