Just released figures show RTÉ’s News Now app has been downloaded 100,000 times in the last four months. This brings the total individual downloads since its launch in January 2010 to a record 300,000.
The first RTÉ News Now app was initially developed for iPhone and iPod Touch and an app for Android phones followed later.
Earlier this year a new app specifically designed for the iPad was launched. Pages were designed on a dual viewing mode, so content on the iPad could be viewed at a portrait or landscape angle. Podcasts of recent radio news shows, a wide range of live and on-demand video content and enhanced social media features were also included.
The apps are free to download – iPhone and iPod Touch account for 77.7% of the downloads while Android and iPad make up 13.4% and 8.9% respectively. The countries (outside of Ireland) which account for the most downloads are the UK, the USA and Australia.
The RTÉ News Now app was developed by RTÉ Publishing and Digital Reach Group (DRG), and has won numerous awards including the Grand Prix at the Appy Awards 2010.
