PlayStation 3 owners will now be able to watch the BBC iPlayer through their televisions. The Beeb has launched a new version of its on-demand web service and millions of gamers in the UK will be able to watch the iPlayer via their TV sets.
Daniel Danker, general manager for programmes and on demand, said: “With today’s announcement, we’re transforming iPlayer in its most natural home: right on the living room TV. By creating a product that’s as simple and intuitive as flicking through TV channels, the BBC is bringing on demand television to mainstream audiences across the UK.”
The service will be rolled out to other gaming devices in the coming months. The BBC predicts that in the next few years 50% of iPlayer use would be viewed by people through their main TVs.
The new version claims a ‘TV-friendly design’ and a ‘personalised’ profile that allows users to access their favourite shows. Last month, the BBC launched its global iPlayer, initially in Western Europe, so it’s available to Irish viewers for a monthly subscription. The service can be accessed for €6.99/month, or for a €49.99 annual fee. The BBC also released a ‘global’ version of its BBC iPlayer iPad app, which can be downloaded in the App Store for free.
