O2 has launched a 21Mbps version of its Hotshot device, which enables users to create a mobile Wi-Fi zone, once they are near O2′s broadband network. The Hotshot allows up to five devices, including smartphones, laptops and tablets, to simultaneously share a mobile broadband connection. The new device will offer faster download and uplink speeds by connecting to a 21Mbps broadband network, which it is currently expanding nationwide. The network is live in urban centres – including Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford and Sligo – and in a number of regional towns, while a further 38 towns around the country will be upgraded to 21Mbps later this year.
The Hotshot promises to deliver an enhanced internet experience – for instance, enabling multiple individual users to stream YouTube video on the same Hotshot device. It will also let users stream high definition (HD) videos. On a 21 Mbps connection, an album containing 10 music tracks of three minutes each will take approximately 80 seconds to download.
“You don’t need to seek out a designated area to access the internet, with the O2 Hotshot you bring your Wi-Fi with you,” says Alan Fox, head of consumer marketing at Telefónica Ireland.
The 21 Mbps Hotshot is available in O2 stores from 1 September, 2011. It will cost €49 on Billpay, and €129.99 on Prepay.
