Facebook’s changes and additions (announced at f8) were big, much bigger than many expected. The Open Graph includes all kinds of apps to do with one’s lifestyle – media, movies, music, TV, news, books and more. Lifestyle apps will mean Facebook users can keep track of every tiny detail of their lives and share all these details with their friends. Developers too can get in on the act and are invited to create new and innovative Lifestyle apps for Facebook.
“We think this is going to make it possible to build a completely new class of apps that wasn’t possible before,” says Mark Zuckerberg.
The video above shows how these apps operate in a user’s Timeline. The Timeline (video below) will also become a detailed record of a user’s life. Even after ten years, people will be able to look back through their Timelines and recall every meal they ate, every concert they attended, every job they hated, every album they listened to. And they’ll be able to share all this with friends, family … and later their grandkids.
It’s revolutionary stuff all right, and the implications for advertisers is obvious. This kind of deep, personal data recorded by millions of individuals is pure gold for brands and companies looking to develop products, analyse cultural trends and [of course] sell stuff to people. Advertisers will be able to target Facebook users based on what they are watching, listening to, reading or cooking. eMarketeer predicts Facebook will earn at least $3.8 billion from advertising this year. The Lifestyle apps will only serve to increase engagement and capture more user data for companies interested in advertising on Facebook.
Facebook has positioned itself to become the largest library of human activity ever established. ‘All human life is there …’
