After weeks of anticipation, iOS 5 is finally available to dowload. Happily, it seems to be as good as Apple promised. Many have already downloaded the new OS but may not know what extra features it allows. Here’s a brief top line analysis.
We can start with iMessage, exclusive for iOS 5 users, very useful to send and receive messages for free. Similar apps, like ‘What´s up’, have reacted and now are for free in the app store.
Then we have Newsstand, a very useful extension to manage and display e-zines, subscriptions and digital books, newspapers or magazines, especially for iPad users.
Notification Center is probably the biggie. It gives the user Android-style notifications that appear on the lock screen and in the panel that slides down when you swipe the top of the screen. You can receive information from social networks, sews, virtual communities, mail, or other apps. It seems very useful, because you can select the apps that are going to show messages in the Notification Center. Obviously, there are some of them that notify you everything that happens on Earth, like Facebook sometimes, so being able to manage this can save you from being ‘glued’ to your iPhone/iPad every single minute of the day.
iOs 5 is now integrated to iCloud, Apple´s free (for the first 5GB) cloud storage service. It does some genuinely useful things, including wireless backups and synchronization. Spending time setting it before using it is definitely worth it to avoid filling your free space in two days with things that you won´t need.
To conclude, there are some improvements like a better Safari, integrated Twitter, the extension Reminders (one of those apps that makes you feel you are living in the future- iPhone! Remind me to go to the pub later!). The camera has more functions now and you can access to it from the lock screen.
The only thing left that you need to know now is how to download it (if you haven´t done it yet). You only have to go from your device to the special platform that Apple has created, wait 15 minutes and it´s done.
