As Facebook employees settle into their new multi-million dollar, one million square foot office campus at Menlo Park, California, the latest stats from AppData show that the Facebook app for Android devices has outstripped the app for Apple devices for the first time. The Android app has 58.8 million daily average users, while Facebook for iPhone has only 57.6 million daily average users. More and more it seems, the iPhone is taking second place to Google’s Android operating system. For example, Facebook’s new Timeline feature is now just available for the iPhone app. At its launch Timeline was available for Android devices. This is a clear indication of where Facebook engineers are showing priority.
There is of course plenty of bad blood between Apple and Facebook. The most recent ‘dig’ by Apple against Facebook was to include Twitter as a default app in iOS5. It’s easy to see why Facebook’s mobile engineers begin work on Android first and iOS … well … later.
