One of the top selling digital tools for Christmas 2011 will be the iPad 2. Thousands of people all over Ireland will join millions of people across the globe on Christmas morning in a flurry of Apple-induced excitement as they unwrap the world’s best selling tablet computer and begin downloading apps by the sleigh load. However, would it be wiser to show a little restraint and wait a few months? The iPad 3 is very likely to be launched between February and March of 2012.
According to a Citi analyst, “there do not appear to be any significant technical hurdles remaining” to prevent the launch of the newest high-resolution iPad in February 2012.
The new iPad will, of course, be more powerful, have a faster processor, perhaps a better graphics package – but the main difference between the iPad 2 and the iPad 3 will be the screen. The new iPad will have double the screen resolution of its earlier cousin, utilising the high-resolution retina display technology found on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.
While it is estimated Apple currently enjoys 65% of the global tablet market, its rivals Samsung and the Amazon Kindle Fire are enjoying ever increasing sales.
Apple is expected to sell at least 12 million iPad 2s worldwide, in the run up to this Christmas. Such a volume of tablet sales is transforming the publishing sector with a host of sophisticated apps emerging from the planet’s largest publishers and media owners.
It looks like 2012 will be the year of the tablet app and innovation is being driven by publishers keen to claw back readers and customers that have been lost to the demise of traditional print media.
The only question for those eager to get to grips with the iPad is – should I wait? Will an early 2012 launch of iPad 3 affect iPad 2 sales this Christmas? Unlikely is the answer.
