As Google prepares to launch its own tablet device (rumoured to be a device with a 7 inch screen like Amazon’s Kindle Fire and not a 9.7 inch screen like the iPad’s), the latest figures on global tablet sales show 73 million tablet computers were sold in 2011, accounting for 25.2% of the global mobile PC market. The data, from the Displaysearch division of market research firm NDP, says 72.7 million tablets were shipped in 2011, which is a massive 252% increase over 2010 – the year the iPad was launched.
The iPad remains the world’s biggest selling tablet device and Google wants in on the action. It is thought Google’s tablet will be an ‘entertainment device’, available for under $200 and made to compete with Amazon’s e-book reader the Kindle Fire as opposed to going head to head with the iPad.
