Carrying around company data has its risks

Forrester, a research group known for its solid predictions, believes there will be over one billion smartphones in the hands of people worldwide by 2016. Forrester’s new research also suggests 90% of these phones will have been built and/or controlled by Apple, Google and Microsoft.
This trend towards smart mobile will be driven by business people. Over 350 million workers will have smartphones but over 200 million of these will own the phones. Companies will witness more workers using their own devices, especially tablets, as the decade proceeds.
With more connected, mobile devices in the hands of consumers, the app sector will grow to be worth an impressive $55 billion. The core message of this research is aimed at large firms and their IT departments and the message is clear – prepare for the era of smart, mobile, professionals with their own devices. The days of the stationary PC at work are over and the security implications for firms are obvious.
Cisco’s most recent report into all things mobile and cloud suggests there will be more than 10 billion mobile Internet-connected devices in 2016, including machine-to-machine (M2M) modules – exceeding the world’s projected population at that time of 7.3 billion. The Cisco study also projects that 71 percent of all smartphones and tablets (1.6 billion) could be capable of connecting to an Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) mobile network by 2016. From a broader perspective, 39 percent of all global mobile devices (more than 4 billion), could be IPv6-capable by 2016.
“By 2016, 60 percent of mobile users – 3 billion people worldwide – will belong to the ‘Gigabyte Club,’ each generating more than one gigabyte of mobile data traffic per month. By contrast, in 2011, only one-half percent of mobile users qualified. This impressive growth in mobile traffic will be driven by more powerful devices, notably smartphones and tablets, using faster networks, such as 4G and Wi-Fi, to access more applications, particularly data-intensive video,” says Suraj Shetty, vice president of product and solutions marketing, Cisco.
