The week started off with news of a Google acquisition. The search giant bought social toolbar developer Meebo on Monday and followed that up by buying mobile office solution Quickoffice on Tuesday.

Wednesday saw the launch of a new Internet Protocol – Ipv6. The new protocol provides an almost unlimited amount of Internet addresses for the growing web. We will also see new domains such as .co and some more interesting ones – Google have applied for a .lol domain.

LinkedIn had a PR nightmare when 6.5 million users had their passwords published on a Russian hacker website. Twitter got a new logo, and Google promised us new offline 3D maps.

From an Irish point of view we had the launch of the new cloud computing support firm Auxillion. On Thursday entrepreneur Niall Harbison, founder of Simply Zesty, announced a competition where two winning start-ups will each a €10,000 in exchange for 10% equity.

There was also the Starbucksgate story. For the queen’s diamond jubilee the Starbuck’s Ireland Twitter account erroneously asked Irish people to tweet reasons why they were proud to be ‘British’. The tweet received a backlash from Irish Twitterers and made news worldwide even featuring on Mashable!
