HMV has launched a new digital music store and a smartphone app. It’s the company’s first major attempt to enter the digital entertainment sector since the company was acquired by Hilco Capital in April.

The HMV app, free on iOS and Android allows users to shop, look and listen to what’s available in HMV.

“The HMV app is the first non-iTunes-based service on Apple’s iOS platform to allow the purchase of digital music downloads through a native app experience,” says the company.

What this means is if you buy MP3s from HMV using the app, they will integrate into your existing iTunes or Windows Media library on your PC or Mac.

Another interesting feature of the app is the Sound Search function. Like Shazam, the feature will tell you what song is playing on the radio, or on the TV, or in a club and then allow you to buy that MP3 immediately.

The HMV app will be available to Irish users at the start of November 2013. It’s already available to UK users.
