Just as apps like Zoom have changed the way we hold work meetings, so virtual reality (VR) can change the way people ‘travel’ the world.

If you are stuck at home for long periods and would like to escape, VR offers hundreds of astonishing experiences for the adventure-hungry nomad.

If you want to buy a decent VR headset try Oculus, Vive or Playstation VR

Here are six of the best VR travel experiences to begin with.

Google Earth VR
Explore the world with Google’s Earth VR experience. Available on Vive and Oculus. This VR experience allows you to ‘explore the world from totally new perspectives. Stroll the streets of Tokyo, soar over Yosemite, or teleport across the globe.’ Pretty amazing stuff.

Everest VR
This amazing VR experience allows you to experience Everest in five iconic scenes including Basecamp; the Khumbu Icefalls; the Lhotse Face; the Hillary Step and the summit. It even has a ‘God mode’. Awesome.

National Geographic VR
Dive with sharks, scale mountains, visit the limits of space and encounter endangered species. This is the VR experience for lovers of Mother Nature in all her glory.

Equator360
This four-part documentary experience takes you to four magical and mysterious points of the Equator. What a way to explore the great unknown and the ancient mysteries of lost civilisations.

Patagonia
One of the best travel experiences available. It costs a few quid but is well worth it. Check out this magical land from the comfort of your armchair.

The Blu
Explore the majesty of the deep ocean and come face to face with some of the most awe-inspiring species on our shared planet. You can also swim with a Blue What. How magical is that?
