We like this social entrepreneurial start-up in the US called Givmo. It also has an application in pretty much every country. The idea is simple. Rather than people throwing away their old stuff (toys, bikes, electrics etc.) they can post a picture of it on Givmo.com and if someone wants it they can ‘order’ it … for free (well, all they have to pay is the shipping/postal charge).
“If you can find the right taker for an item, people are willing to give their stuff away for free, with the knowledge that it’s going to be put in the hands of somebody who loves it,” says founder, Dustin Byrne.
The company makes its money from taking a small commission from the shipping cost. It also donates money to charity. It’s social commerce in action and would work very well in most countries, including Ireland.
