Google has recently stepped into the ring with the Kindle Fire by releasing the Nexus 7 tablet but now Amazon is fighting back by developing its own smartphone.
Following earlier rumours, the Wall Street Journal has reported that Amazon is already testing a smartphone with Asian component suppliers and the device could be in production before the end of the year.
According to the Journal’s source, the phone will have a 4-5 inch screen. The news seems to confirm Bloomberg’s report last week that Amazon was working with hardware maker Foxconn to create a device to challenge the iPhone and Android-based phones.
The Seattle-based internet retailer is also said to be readying the release of its second-generation Kindle Fire, to try and compete with the Nexus 7 (which has been getting rave reviews thus far) and the impending arrival of the iPad mini.
