appymondays

Each Monday, DigitalTimes.ie reviews a few of the best apps from the free-to-enter App of the Month competition run in conjunction with ‘Newstalk Breakfast’. The competition is now open for July’s entries and here are some of this week’s entries that caught our eye.

Brush DJ

Brush DJ is an app developed by dentists to encourage people to spend more time cleaning their teeth. The app which is available for both iOS and Android takes music from your phone or iPod and plays a two minute track (the recommended time to spend brushing your teeth). The app also has helpful reminders about when to floss and use mouthwash and enables users to store information such as dental appointment times.

The video below give you an idea of how it works.

Hailo

Hailo is an app for both Android and iOS that allows users order a taxi from their smartphones.

With two taps of their screen, users can order a taxi from anywhere in Dublin. You have the option of paying with cash or a pre-registered card, which can be Visa, Mastercard, Laser or AMEX. Cash payments are made in person and for card payments the driver enters the meter rate into his own app and the fare is deducted from your account.

Once a customer books a taxi, the driver’s photo and roof sign are displayed, as well as a call button to contact the driver directly. A real-time countdown indicates when the cab will get there and a notification is sent on arrival.

The company was started by three London cab drivers last year and there are currently more than 600 taxis in Dublin registered with the service. Hailo plans to launch in New York, Chicago and Toronto soon.

Users can get €5 off their first card hail by using the promo code DUBLIN.

Click A Taxi

Our second cab booking app entry this week is the Danish developed Click A Taxi. It currently works with over 1,000 taxi companies covering all locations in Ireland, the UK, Poland, Ukraine and Scandinavia for Android, Apple and Windows phones.

The app orders a taxi from your location using the GPS technology on your phone and chooses the best available cab. Estimated pick up times are shown on-screen and you can also cancel the order any time with another simple click. The app doesn’t cost anything to use or download – you simply pay the driver as usual at the end of your trip.
