Microsoft's Metro interface is to be renamed

Microsoft’s tiled user interface introduced with Windows phones and used in Windows 7 OS, the upcoming Windows 8 and the Surface tablet, is no longer to be called ‘Metro’.

Technology blog The Verge reported that an email to Microsoft employees said that the company planned to “discontinue the use” of the term Metro following “discussions with an important European partner”.

It was initially thought that the ‘Metro’ name could be the subject of a copyright case German firm Metro AG but Microsoft has since denied the claim.

The memo sent to employees said a replacement name would be announced soon but in the meantime were told to refer to the interface as “Windows 8 style UI.”
