Enterprise Ireland is investing in ZinMobi, a mobile marketing and messaging platform for retailers.

“WhatsApp has shown the world what is possible when you create something that uses mobile phones to deliver immediate value to customers,” says the founder of ZinMobi, Brian Stephenson. (Note: WhatsApp had nearly half a billion users when it was sold to Facebook).

ZinMobi already has some of Ireland’s retail and fast food chains as clients, including Centra, Four Star Pizza, Papa John’s, Shaw’s, SuperValu and Woodies, and plans to start its global expansion by opening offices in London and North America in 2014.

How does ZinMobi work? It sends text messages of special offers and coupons to consumers, with their agreement. It’s a cloud (SAAS) technology that integrates with all major retailer EPOS systems, thus reducing the marketing and sales workload for the retailer.

Enterprise Ireland didn’t say how much it is investing in the company, or what percentage of the start-up it now owns.
