RTÉ Digital has partnered with Microsoft to give Xbox 360 users access to the RTÉ Player.
As devices like the Xbox volve into home entertainment hubs, as opposed to pure gaming devices, RTÉ says it’s important its digital content is available on them.
It’s also about “reaching and serving new audiences”, says Muirne Laffan, managing director of RTÉ Digital.
Microsoft says there has been a stark increase in the number of entertainment apps being developed for the Xbox, which shows it is becoming a shared family device rather than a pure games console for children and teens.
“We’re seeing usage of entertainment apps on Xbox Live increase significantly and in 2012 the amount of TV and entertainment offerings on Xbox 360 almost tripled worldwide,” says Shirley Finnerty, Xbox category lead for Microsoft.
RTÉ Digital says the deal with Microsoft is ‘purely based on content’ and there will be no share of any potential advertising revenue.
An impressive feature of the RTÉ Player app for the Xbox 360 is the ability for users to navigate the app using their gestures and voice.
RTÉ Player for Xbox 360 is only available to Xbox Live Gold members in Ireland, and not in any other countries.
