UTV Ireland, a new general entertainment channel, looks set to launch in January 2015.

UTV Media plc says the new station will create 100 new jobs. The new channel will be based in Dublin with additional journalists in Cork, Galway, Waterford and Limerick.

The BAI is now in negotiations with UTV Ireland regarding “a television content provision contract”.

This will be a different contract from the regulatory regime applied to the public service broadcasters, RTÉ and TG4, and the commercial broadcaster, TV3 and its sister station, 3e. It differs specifically in the areas of “carriage, content, and levy”.

In other words, UTV Ireland won’t have to abide by the same programming obligations, which are set out in law, as TV3, and the public service broadcasters, RTÉ and TG4.

UTV Ireland also won’t be subject to a broadcasting levy but will pay the BAI a levy for the free-to-air services.
